Changes and continuities in national research evaluation systems in the context of the global reform of research assessment
Convenors and Chair: Federico Vassen, Noela Invernizzi
Various processes to reform research evaluation systems are underway around the world. What were statements and proposals for change just a few years ago are now being implemented. Latin America has also undergone transformations in line with this global trend, but little is known about the configuration of research systems in the countries of this region and their processes of change. This panel seeks to show, on a comparative level, how research evaluation systems are structured in five Latin American/Ibero-American countries and what progress has been made and what challenges remain to be faced in order to achieve a new format for responsible research evaluation. It is argued that designing a science policy for Latin America/Ibero-America?and for any region of the Global South?requires paying special attention to the mechanisms that underpin the evaluation of scientific careers and research projects. The current transformation process is an opportunity to design a research governance system that seeks to improve the quality of science in Latin America, while preserving the possibility of solving problems relevant to the region.
